Call for Oral Presentations: “Astroscience on the African Continent”
Abstract
Astroscience, particularly in the fields of astrobiology and astrochemistry, presents Africa with a unique opportunity to contribute to the global search for life beyond Earth while deepening our understanding of the chemical processes that led to life’s emergence. Africa’s vast and geologically diverse landscapes—such as the Yusufari (Nigeria) and Namib Deserts, alkaline lakes, swamps, plains, savannas, and meteorite-rich regions—serve as natural laboratories for studying extreme environments that mirror extraterrestrial conditions. These studies are crucial for astrobiology, helping scientists identify biosignatures and model potential life-sustaining conditions on planets such as Venus and Mars, as well as icy moons like Enceladus and Europa.
Astrochemistry, the study of molecules in space and their role in planetary formation, is another area where Africa can make significant contributions. With initiatives like the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) in South Africa and growing collaborations in radio astronomy, African researchers are well-positioned to investigate complex organic molecules in dense molecular clouds and their role in life’s origins. By
Integrating astrochemistry with local expertise in organic chemistry and other sciences, Africa has the potential to advance research on the fundamental building blocks of life.
Despite the promise of these fields, challenges remain, including limited funding, a shortage of specialised academics, a lack of employment opportunities, focused and uninterrupted continuation in astroscience education as well as low public awareness. Brain drain is another challenge impacting many African countries. To address these gaps and cultivate collaboration, we invite national and international scientists to submit abstracts and deliver oral presentations on topics related to astrobiology, astrochemistry, astrophysics, planetary sciences, geochemistry, atmospheric sciences and meteoritics science.
This exchange of knowledge will enhance scientific dialogue, strengthen international cooperation, and provide African scientists with valuable insights into cutting-edge research and methodologies.
Submission Details:
i. Abstract length, 250-300 words
ii. Abstract Deadline: Thursday, 31st July 2025
iii. Submission Email: norcelgroup@gmail.com
Investing in astrobiology and astrochemistry will not only strengthen Africa’s scientific capabilities but
also inspire a new generation of researchers to explore fundamental questions about life’s origins and the possibility of extraterrestrial life. By strategically positioning itself in these fields, Africa can become a key player in global astroscience, contributing to both fundamental research and practical applications in space technology, agriculture, and environmental sustainability.
The conference will be held at NASRDA HQ, Abuja, Nigeria, with a livestream available via Zoom. If you are delivering an oral presentation, please forward your abstract at your earliest convenience.
For those not presenting, you are still welcome to attend by registering at https://norcel.net
We look forward to your contributions and participation in this exciting event.
