MOON-SIGHTING PROJECT

The Centre for Basic Space Science is saddled with the responsibility of carrying out scientific observation of the Moon; the nearest celestial object to the Earth, in order to calculate and predict the appearance of the first astronomical lunar crescent for each month of the year. Using the lunar-phase prediction software developed indigenously at our Centre, we provide vital and accurate information on: time of lunar conjunction, time of sunset, time of moonset as well as the appearance time for the first astronomical lunar crescent. Interestingly, this vital information concerning the moon is usually provided with reference to all the 36 State Capitals in Nigeria as well as the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja. However, the Centre has the capacity to provide the same information for any given specific location in Nigeria when requested. In all, the calculated results are always made available for the information of the general public especially those that need them for religious and academic purposes.
